BROWN ENDOSCOPIC CARPAL TUNNEL RELEASE

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome occurs when there is constant pressure on the median nerve at your wrist.

Constant pressure on that nerve can lead to permenant and irreversible nerve damage.

The most common symptoms patients experience is numbness and tingling of the thumb, index, middle, and one side of the ring finger.  The symptoms tend to be worse at night and wake you up.  Patients describe the symptoms also occurring with work, driving, drying or combing hair, and typing. The pain may often travel up to the elbow, neck or shoulder (commonly called referred pain).

Two percent (2%) of patients with carpal tunnel syndrome that are treated with non surgical treatment actually have complete resolution of their symptoms. (reference JHS article Feb. 20, 2007)

Non surgical treatments aim to reduce swelling in the carpal tunnel, in the hopes that less swelling will lead to less pressure on the nerve.   Surgical release of the transverse carpal ligament, the "roof" of the tunnel, increases the volume of the carpal tunnel exponentially.

The Brown Endoscopic Carpal Tunnel Release needs to be performed by an experienced Hand Surgeon.  The procedure is considered outpatient surgery (you do not have to stay overnight).  Typically patients have little to no post operative pain.  You need to wear a bandage for one week.  Patients who do not do physical labor type jobs can go back to work the next day (those who mostly work at a desk).  After 6-8 days, the bandages are removed.
